I hate to admit it, I sometimes cringe over birthday party invitations for my daughter and she isn’t even in “real” school yet! Don’t get me wrong, I think it is wonderful that she is invited but in my mind I immediately do into task mode. More things to add to my to do list!
I need to…
- RSVP (I always wait til the last minute, not sure why?)
- Get a present, card and gift wrap
- Figure out where the party is
- Wrap present, sign card
- Map directions to party AND be there on time
- And rework my weekend work/chores around said party
So here’s what it used to look like… We’ve all been there, rushing out of the house to your local Target (or your store of choice is) to grab the birthday card, bag, tissue appear and card 20 minutes before the party starts which you only kinda know how to get to… Of course you need to deal with the aisles of toys and the distractions. While in line to check out, google directions, remember gift receipt and scurry to the car. , remove price tags, sign card and wrap gift in your present wrapping station otherwise known as the back seat of the car…. AND DONE! You get to the party exhausted and feeling somewhat winded by all the activities and the time crunch of getting it all done and this is before the party!!! Shew… I’m exhausted talking about it.
I… I mean she has 3 parties in 2 weekends all for girls turning 5! I normally would have shopped for each party the weekend of the part so I likely would have easily spent an hour in the store picking out these gifts and wrapping items. My budget is usually around $25 per kid plus the cost of the bags/paper. So I discovered a better (and cheaper) way! Kids have so many flippin toys and they are way too immersed into electronics so I’ve decided to give the gift of making memories with a gift certificate that you put some thought into.
Memory Making Gifts:
- Bowling Alley
- Craft Class
- Amazing Glaze
- Pumpkin Farm
- Petting Zoo
- Science Center
- Tickets to a show
- Movie tickets
- Minor League Sports game
- Batting Cages
- Putt Putt Golf
- Mani-Pedi’s for Mom and Me Date
- Driving Range
- Go Cart Track
On the way home from the grocery store I stopped at Amazing Glaze and got all 3 gifts in one trip… It took about 15 minutes total. No aimlessly wondering down the toy aisle, no expensive gift bags, wrap and bows, no wrapping gifts or stuffing them in bags at the last minute, no gift receipts, no duplicate gifts resulting in extra work for the parent. This was super easy for me and I think the parents will be thankful for a gift that is a little different and one that allows them to do something fun as a family.
What are your thoughts?
In the spirit of full disclosure and pure irony we got the parties backwards and showed up to the wrong party on the wrong day! Luckily we were early and figured out our mistake and we got to the right party at the right time! Just shows that undoing overwhelm is a work in progress! The great thing was that I shopped ahead and was fully prepared to go from one party to another at a moment’s notice without missing a beat… Or a splash in this case!
