Has your phone ever rang, beeped or buzzed as your child was almost asleep for nap time? I wouldn’t want to be on the other end of that phone call! But if your phone has ever interrupted you…keep reading because we can help. I know you can’t just turn off your ringer because your iPhone is your connection to the outside world and there are valid reasons that you would want to be interrupted. If you have ever had a need to stay connected but also avoid unimportant interruptions, you need to get familiar with the Do Not Disturb feature on your iPhone.
My husband recently had the flu and he was sleeping in the basement. I told him to text me if he needed anything before I went to bed. I usually turn my ringer off at night but knew I had to keep it on in case he sent me a text (which he did). My phone kept me up ALL night. From Twitter & Temple Run alerts to email dings… I got up that morning totally exhausted. The night before I thought about adjusting notifications in my settings but changing all those notifications seemed like too much work especially since I would have changed them back the next day. At the time it didn’t seem worth the effort. Of course, the next morning I realize I should have taken a minute or two to figure this out and my day would have been a little um A LOT less foggy.
After a crappy night sleep I decided I would figure out how to use my iPhone features to address this issue without having to adjust ALL of my notification settings to fix this with many less clicks, swipes and taps. Turns out to this feature is super simple to set-up. I’ll be running it through a test run to make sure it works as expected.
Go to Settings, select Do Not Disturb
Choose the Options that fit your needs with just a few quick swipes.
Manual – to enable (this means the setting is activated to turn off alerts, alarms and notifications).
Scheduled – set a regular time slot that you don’t want to be disturbed. This is brilliant!!! Apple created this setting for parents! How many of you have forgotten to the turn their ringers off at nap time to have their babies woken up from the untimely call?! This is perfect for nap time, family time, dinner or any other time that you routinely don’t want to be disturbed. Set the time frame that works for your schedule.
Allow Calls From – Choose everyone, no one or just your favorite contacts.
Repeated Calls – This is a great back-up setting just in case someone calls with an emergency that isn’t in your All Calls From setting. I feel like it is better to be safe then sorry.
Silence – Choose when you want the Do Not Disturb settings to be enabled.
